Social Skills Training and Personal Effectiveness
The first Pre-Conference Workshop is on “Social Skills Training and Personal Effectiveness” run by the world renowned Professor Robert Paul Liberman. This is an extremely rare chance for participants to learn from the best on these skills we have been using in many Asian countries for years. Re-integration of clients with major mental illness back to society often requires social skills training and improving personal effectiveness. Professor Liberman will also share his famous modules in these skills training, as well as his wealth of knowledge in Psychiatric Rehabilitation.
Community Integration
Professor Patricia Nemec has been very active in USA as well as in Asia for many years. She is a keen teacher spreading the importance of psychiatric rehabilitation and societal integration for services in mental healthcare. She has been actively consulting in Asia and has an expert eye on Asian practice. She will share her views in a regional perspective on “Community Integration”.
Thrive – Transforming Trauma into Triumph
Ms Gayathri Ramprasad is the founder of the Silver Ribbon (India), as well as a mental health consultant based in USA. She was an Eli Lily winner for her work in mental health promotion and advocacy. Her topic on “Thrive – Transforming Trauma into Triumph” will allow healthcare workers learn how to help clients overcome the pains of mental illness and succeed in normal and effective living. This innovative and highly interactive workshop will empower clients to create Personalized Recovery Actions Plans. Drawing from her lived experience, Gayathri Ramprasad will address critical issues affecting people living with mental illness: lack of awareness, stigma and other barriers to treatment and recovery, suicide attempts, hospitalizations, medications, and much more. Participants will leave the workshop with a renewed sense of hope and solidarity, and a wide array of tips and tools to transform the trauma of mental illness into the triumph of recovery.
Integrated Support for the Recovery of Persons with Mental Illness
The Day 2 Workshop is put together by various well-known local speakers who are very active in Singapore. Dr Ang Yong Guan - a famous private psychiatrist and also Chairman of Action Group for the Mental Ill (AGMI), Dr Sally Thio - President of Association for Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Director of Hougang Care Centre, together with Mr Yew Kim Nguang, Mr Soh Eng Sim and well known American expert Professor Marianne Farkas will talk on “Integrated Support for the Recovery of Persons with Mental Illness” to show how different services in Singapore can work together to best integrate the whole process of recovery and return to community living for patients with mental illness.
Learning Basic Hypnosis
The 2-Day Workshop “Learning Basic Hypnosis” is run by Dr Daniel Kwek, Head of Psychological Medicine Unit in Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Hypnosis is a very useful skill to help patients retrieve suppressed unconscious issues to conscious awareness and to work through them. This workshop is suitable for those who are interested in learning hypnosis.
Neuro- Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Mental Wellness
The 2-Day “Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Mental Wellness” is run by effective speaker Mr Stuart Tan from Adam Khoo Learning Technology Group. NLP has been increasingly taught and used for therapy and promoting mental wellness. This is a good opportunity to start learning about NLP.
Crises Intervention during disaster situations
The “Crises Intervention during disaster situations” workshop is run by various doctors from the Institute of Mental Health (IMH). This workshop has been successfully running for years with different hospitals and co-operations, to equip staff with skills to manage psychological consequences in disaster situations. These soft skills are also applicable in daily work with patients with minor crises in their lives. The doctors running the workshop have experience in recent disasters in Singapore, as well as in regional countries eg Tsunami and Indonesia earthquake. The importance of crises management in disaster situations can be seen in the recent Myanmar’s cyclone and China earthquake.
Managing violence at workplace – Introducing SMART training
“Introducing SMART Training” manual have being introduced in Institute of Mental Health (IMH) to help manage violence and assaults in workplace. This workshop is run by experts who have put together their knowledge in this SMART Training manual, and train staff to identify aggression and best ways to manage this. Skills like verbal de-escalation, verbal judo, root cause analysis and role-play will be taught. It is an important workshop which helps organizations and people to have the knowledge to manage violence in workplace.
Certified Practitioner in Psychiatric Rehabilitation (CPRP) training
The 2-Day “Certified Practitioner in Psychiatric Rehabilitation (CRRP) Training” is run by Professor Marianne Farkas. She is very experienced in training people who are keen on becoming experts in psychiatric rehabilitation. The upcoming President of Association of Psychiatric Rehabilitation Society, Mr Yew Kim Nguang, is also chairing this workshop to train skills in psychiatric rehabilitation.
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), life saving skills for everyone
The “Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) - life saving skills for everybody” is run by Ms Porsche Poh who is the founder of Silver Ribbon (Singapore). This important skill are gaining more popularity in the region. These psychological first-aid skills will empower public and everyone to engage and assist people with mentally distress or depression. Early identification, engagement and help will save lives.
Cognitive Rehabilitation
This Workshop focuses on Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Recovery – the trainers are Professor Kim Mueser and Professor Susan Mcgurk. This world-renowned husband and wife team will be able to share their wealth of knowledge and skills with all participants.
The first day workshop is run by Professor Mcgurk on Cognitive Rehabilitation – which is very important for patients who are recovering from a major mental illness learn how to overcome symptoms and reorganize their thinking to best function in their new role in their family and society.
Illness Management and Recovery Program (IMR) for persons with Severe Mental Illness
The Second day workshop is run by Professor Kim Mueser on his well-known work in the area of “Illness Management and Recovery Program for persons with Severe Mental Illness”. This is truly a rare opportunity for participants to learn from the best at such close proximity.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and its application in Mental Health
The 8th workshop will be on the philosophy and principles of traditional Chinese medicine. Dr Swee Yong Peng who is a very famous doctor in both Western Medicine as well as Traditional Chinese Medicine will be teaching this workshop. He will teach the principles of TCM on the first day and TCM and mental ailments and wellness on the second day. This is a good chance to begin learning about TCM and its use in a modern society such as Singapore.
Working with families of Schizophrenia clients with children – An Inter-agency approach
The 9th workshop is run by Professor David Hay who has contributed many years in the work of helping families and childrens with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The first day workshop focuses on an inter-agency approach to help families with children and a mentally ill parent. This important area is very important as it is often lacking or not integrated fully.

The second day workshop will teach the people how to help children with ADHD as well as how to help the whole family cope and improve.
